Alex graduated from the Universidad Nacional of Costa Rica in 1985 and then completed an Anesthesia Internship at the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph, Canada, followed by an Anesthesia Residency with a DVSc at the same institution from 1987 to 1990. He became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia in 1990. Following his residency, he returned to Costa Rica to work at the University for 1-year and then established his own private mixed practice Hospital for 9 years, before returning to North America, where he worked as a faculty member at the University of Florida for 5 years, to later returned to the Ontario Veterinary College where he has been since 2005 and is currently Professor of Anesthesia. His areas of research include the effects of intravenous anesthetic drugs and of local regional techniques on the potency of inhalant anesthetics, as well as their cardiorpulmonary effects in small and large animals, and their effects on anesthetic recovery in horses. Alex has published numerous research, review, and clinical articles in peer-reviewed veterinary journals on these topics and is co-editor of the Manual of Equine Anesthesia and Analgesia. Alex lectures regularly at national and international courses/conferences on anesthesia of all species.
