Certain characteristics of ruminants and pigs make them ideal patients for surgical interventions. However, there are ethical and regulatory constraints specific to food producing species that warrant consideration prior to entering into a surgical plan with the owner. Some of these constraints associated with drug use, orthopedic implants, surgical mesh, and cosmetic procedures will be presented. At the conclusion of this seminar, participants will be able to make more informed decisions about surgical procedures in food-producing species.
