The Underside of the Iceberg: Pathologic Correlates of Therapeutically Intractable Infectious Orthopedic Lesions: Don’t Be Flummoxed by the Bummocks! Management of Septic Synovial Structures
Professor of Pathology University of Pennsylvania, Department of Pathobiology, New Bolton Center
Orthopedic infections in large animals can be challenging to accurately diagnose, prognosticate, and successfully treat. Use of advanced diagnostic imaging in conjunction with pathologic analyses provide insight into the etiopathogenesis and complicating factors that may affect clinical outcomes. A multi-disciplined, team-based approach to antemotem diagnoses, including radiologically-targeted bone biopsies can provide critical information, including etiologic diagnoses. Case-based examples provided in this seminar explore etiologic and pathoantatomic complexities of orthopedic infections and demonstrate underlying factors that impact clinical resolution, morbidity and mortality.
