Designing analgesic protocols should be ground on solid understanding of pain pathophysiology. While opioid and lipid signaling are major targets for pain management, the risk of adverse effects may limit their use in critically ill surgical patients. This lecture will review additional signaling systems that can be targeted and modalities that can be employed to optimize post-surgical pain control.
