Postoperative gastrointestinal tract dysfunction is a broad term that captures the spectrum of dysmotility and associated disorders that can develop in the gastrointestinal tract after surgery. Postoperative gastrointestinal tract dysfunction increases morbidity and mortality, prolongs hospitalization, and increases cost of treatment. This seminar will utilize a cross-species comparative approach to examine pathophysiology, clinical presentations, and potential preventative and therapeutic strategies associated with this problem.
