Renal function can be a critical anesthetic consideration, from the 17-year-old cat with chronic insufficiency to the 2-year-old with acute injury. Maintenance of renal perfusion and function is a vital component to anesthetic management. In this lecture, we will review the anatomy and physiology of the kidneys as well as the effects of anesthetic agents on renal function.
