Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia
The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, The University of Edinburgh
I graduated as a veterinarian at the University of León (Spain) in 2004.
After 2 years working in an equine referral practice in Spain (Hospital Veterinario Sierra de Madrid) as intern and clinician, I moved to Belgium (Ghent University) from 2007 to 2014. Within that period I became a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA) as well as Doctor of Veterinary Science (Ghent University) with my PhD entitled “Dexmedetomidine for balanced anaesthesia in horses”, both under the supervision of Prof. Frank Gasthuys and Prof. Stijn Schauvliege.
From 2015 to 2018 I led a post-doctoral fellowship project at the São Paulo State University (UNESP) of Botucatu, Brazil, under the supervision of Prof. Stelio Pacca Loureiro Luna. Our team evaluated the sedative and antinociceptive effects of different combinations of the alpha-2 agonist detomidine and the opioid methadone in standing horses.
In September 2018 I joined the Department of Anaesthesia and Analgesia of the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies and The Roslin Institute, The University of Edinburgh as Senior Lecturer. Apart of my clinical and teaching duties, I am currently leading the project "the Confidential Enquiry into Perioperative Equine Fatalities 4 (CEPEF4)", within the CEPEF research team (Dr. Polly Taylor, Dr. Mark Johnston, Prof. Regula Bettschart-Wolfensberger and Prof. José I Redondo).
