Rick Schultz is an author, inventor, lecturer, and retired Chief Executive Officer/Founder of Spectrum Surgical Instruments Corp. Under his direction, the company had over 250 employees across the United States and grew to a national presence. Schultz served as contributing editor of HSPA’s (formerly IAHCSMM) Central Service Technical Textbook (Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth Editions). He authored the textbooks Inspecting Surgical Instruments: An Illustrated Guide - 2005, The World of Surgical Instruments: The Definitive Inspection Textbook - 2018, 2nd edition - 2023, Instrument Coaching Cards™ - 2020, and The World of Surgical Instruments for Animal Health - released January 2022.
He is known as The Instrument Whisperer™ in the magazine process, where his column explores surgical instrument inspection, processing, and repair. Schultz was named IAHCSMM’s Educator of the Year in 2002, and in 2006 was named American Hospital Association Educator of the Year. In 2007, he was named by Healthcare Purchasing News as one of the 30 Most Influential People in Healthcare Sterile Processing. Schultz has provided educational lectures to surgical personnel and health care professionals across the country. He lectures at state and national veterinary conferences throughout the United States. He also provides sales culture and revenue growth consulting and serves on three company’s board of directors. Schultz is a 2019 graduate of the FBI Citizens Academy and has also been an Entrepreneur in Residence at Kent State University, School of Business since 2019.
