Obstructive conditions of the cecum and large colon can be found at any age in cattle. This presentation will focus on those affecting the calves. The obstruction can be complete (atresia coli, intussusception, internal herniation, fecolyte/enterolyte) or partial (necrotic typhlocolitis). The diagnostic approach using a combination of laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging will be presented. The unique challenge of working on the large colon in cattle will also be discussed (mesenteric attachment, microbial flora, etc). Finally, an update on atresia coli surgery regarding the surgical approach and the prognosis will be presented using clinical cases.
